Three Studies of a Child's Head

Flanders, between 1618 and 1620

These works belong to a group of studies, similar in the character of painting and the technique, in which Jordaens depicted the heads of models turned in various directions. They were all executed in oils on thick paper that was later pasted onto canvas, evidently for better preservation. The model here may have been Jordaens’s elder daughter, Elisabeth, who was born on 26 June 1617. The same model, shown from a slightly different angle, can be found in Jordaens’s painting Pan and Syrinx (Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels) that is usually dated to around 1620.
