Illustration for Charles Perrault's 'Bluebeard'

France, before 1862

This drawing belongs to the series of large illustrations produced by the artist for Charles Perrault's tales, including The Tale of the Bluebeard. It is known that before 1863 Dore made drawings for illustrations directly on a wooden board avoiding preliminary sketches on paper. For some reason or other this drawing was not included in the book, remaining a rare sample of Dore's original drawing on a board. Its comparison with other illustrations in the book shows that the transference of a drawing to another technique as well as printing deprive the initial image of its pictorial quality and cause the levelling of colour nuances.
