Vase of Flowers

Holland, early 18th century

Working mainly in Amsterdam, the artist gained fame for his idealized landscapes and still lifes of flowers and fruits. Such flower compositions were highly popular in 17th-century Dutch art and van Huijsum always emphasized their decorative qualities. He paid great attention to the varied forms of the flowers, the nuances of colouring, painting the whole in a free, spontaneous and dynamic style.
