Russia, St Petersburg, 1853

Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna (1819–1876) was the eldest daughter of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia, the first owner of the Mariinsky Palace in the heart of Saint Petersburg, which is named after her. Maria Nikolayevna was President of the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1852 until her death. She married Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg, the son of Napoleon’s stepson Eugène Beauharnais, in 1839. Her second (morganatic) marriage was to Count Grigory Alexandrovich Stroganov.
